Encouraging the use of kid’s dictionary is one of the best ways in helping kids to learn and master a specific language. Dictionaries designed for kids offer simplified, thrilling and friendly educational learn language and various other elements of learning.

Provide kids with good dictionaries so that they can enjoy the learning process. First teach them the basic concept of dictionary and the way words are listed. When they are aware of the alphabetical listing of the words, help them learn tricks and shortcuts to find a specific word instantly on any dictionary. Parents and teachers can even make use of online dictionaries where it becomes easier for kids to learn a specific word, term or picture. This kind of learning will promote autonomy and confidence in kids.

Following are some of the best ways to teach kids to use dictionary :

Prepare a questionnaire about the word search, how to get the synonym, how to get the verb form and other elements of using a dictionary. This will help them have a better understanding of the usage.

Try and provide them a picture dictionary associated with words and terms. Pictures and images fascinate kids and encourage them to go ahead with the learning. Once the kid becomes familiar to all the pictures switch over to language dictionary.

When you find your kids are with their friends or playing in groups, try to involve yourself in the games and encourage them to play word games and crossword puzzles. This can be the best combination of learning and playing.

Give your kid a list of incorrect spellings and ask them to correct the spellings using a dictionary. This will enhance their vocabulary.

Give kids a time limit to search a specific word from the dictionary. In case you are using an online dictionary, ask your kid to list down the meaning and two usage examples of any particular word. Both can be helpful to them in searching and using words in their verbal and written skills.
